A little guidance

Any place. Its own time.

Understand planning locations, local clocks, dates, units and the tools that use the physical device.

Planning there. Standing here.

Most weather and planning views use the place selected at the top of the app. Live instruments use the phone’s physical position and sensors. Keeping those two uses separate lets you plan for a distant place while still pointing a camera at the sky above you.

Choose a planning place

Use Change to choose your device location, search for a place, drop a pin or enter coordinates. Forecasts and planning calculations follow that selection where the tool supports them.

Planning times use the selected place’s local clock. A named time zone and offset appear with the place, so a distant sunrise or sunset is read as local time there.

Choose a day or time

Use the date and time controls in the tool you are using. An annual table selects a year; solstice tools show their seasonal context. Stargazing refers to the night beginning on the selected date.

A planning date does not turn a current reading into a historical one. Weather, wind, tide and environmental sections keep the coverage and live/forecast labels supplied by their source. A date beyond a forecast’s range may have no data.

Tools that use your actual position

Sky finder uses the current time and physical location. Live Sun and Moon camera or compass trackers use the phone’s position and heading. Emergency signal and location uses the device’s coordinates.

Changing the planning place does not move the phone or change where those instruments point. For camera overlays, local magnetic interference, camera tracking and manual alignment also affect the match.

Set your units

Open Settings from Today to choose the weather units. Sailing also offers wind-speed units including knots, kilometres per hour and metres per second. Read the unit shown next to a value when comparing sources or tools.

The Settings guide

The example at the top

The three figures are a sample hour of weather (18 °C, a 5 m/s breeze and 2.5 mm of rain) written in the units you have chosen. Change a unit below and the example changes with it.

Units

The first time iCaelum starts it picks units from your iPhone's region; after that it keeps what you choose here.

Units change how values are shown, not the forecast itself: values are converted on your iPhone.

Welcome screen

Shows the screen from the first launch again: what iCaelum does and where to choose your place. Settings closes and the welcome opens; after it you are back on Today.

Version

The line at the bottom is the app version and, in brackets, its build number. Quote both when you report a problem.
